Manchin-Toomey Defeated

The Senate voted Wednesday, in front of Sandy Hook parents and Gabby Giffords, against the widely supported (polling figures go as high as 91 percent) Manchin-Toomey amendment. The amendment would have improved background check systems for gun purchases and ensured that anyone listed in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System be prohibited from buying a gun. This is disgraceful; the NRA flat out lied about the contents of the amendment and pushed Senators to vote against it. The worst part though is that Max Baucus (D-MT), Mark Begich (D-AK), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Mark Pryor (D-AR) voted against the amendment because they were afraid to stand up and do what is right in spite of an upcoming election. Especially since the amendment’s popularity meant that doing so probably would not have effected their ability to get re-elected even in the red states they represent. I do tip my hat to Susan Collins (R-ME), Mark Kirk (R-IL), John McCain (R-AZ), and especially co-authors of the amendment Joe Manchin (D-WV) & Pat Toomey (R-PA) for reaching across the aisle and trying to ensure that sensible gun regulation can be accomplished to help stem the tide of gun violence in this country. Here is a full list of the Senators that voted against this popular amendment.

Against for Procedural Reasons:

NOTE: I will be posting my blog entry giving my reasons for supporting this legislation (even though it has already been voted on now) it is one of those that has piled up while I have been having internet issues.

Waymond D. Horton believes environment should be the first consideration not the last; that all people should be treated equally; that education should depend upon ability not wealth; that health care should respond to need not bank balance; that the gap between rich and poor should be reduced not widened; that the public should own essential services and infrastructure; that law and dispute resolution should be the basis of treatment of citizens, and of relationships between citizens of all countries; that it is better to treat causes than symptoms, to prevent rather than cure, in health, social or environmental matters.
